This design style became popular in the 1980's, and is resurging again currently. It's a style that brings the energy of the seaside into the home. This is done in a number of ways. First is the color scheme, which consists of mostly blues, whites, tans, and on occasion, teracotta reds to balance the tone. This more modern style steers clear of cliche ceramic shells, and instead calls to the ocean in more subtle ways. Wooden flooring resembling the floor of a ship. Sandy colored carpets or rugs. Unfinished, raw wooden accents to resemble driftwood. These aspects coupled with the trademarked striped pattern create the Nautical design style.
